Twinbytes – Computer Repair Tip #1 – Physically clean your computer

This will be the first of many simple computer repair tips to help the average person prevent their computer from having problems, and also to repair certain problems on their computer.

Dust is one of the major problems of computers slowing down, freezing and dying.  If your computer is in a dusty environment, you should clean it more often.  There are vents on the back and almost always on one side, and sometimes both sides, and occassionally on the front too.  These vents are critcial for air flow which takes in cool air from outside the case and brings it into the computer to cool the components and blows the hot air out.  That’s another story, but the computer needs to have the temperature of the room cool too, otherwise it’s just bringing in warm air which doesn’t help much.  Cooler is always better, but there is such as thing as too cold!

Anyway, you can use a non static cloth to wipe dust off the computer, but be sure it’s turned off first just incase you shock it and it turns off.  To give you an example of static, if you were to walk around in your socks on carpet floor, and then touch the metal part of your computer on the back, not only would you get the stock of your life! but you would also possibly blow up your computer!  That’s why computers have plastic casing around the front and sides.  Metal is only exposed at the back.

proper vacuum for cleaning computersYou can buy a can of compressd air from any electronics store or any store that sells computers.  They’re about $10 and works great for a few uses before it runs out of air pressure.  NEVER, and I mean NEVER use a traditional household vaccum cleaner to clean your computer!  These vaccums have tons of static electricity build up around the end of the hose and will totally destroy your computer.  If you have a lot of computers to clean and you clean them on a regular basis, like I do being a computer repair technician, you can purchase a computer vacuum for about the price of a dozen cans of compressed air.  So, you can bet on getting your monies worth based on how fast you go through cans normally.  Afterwards, you’ll be saving 100% of that money.

To avoid costly computer repairs, be sure to ground yourself properly before opening the computer and getting your hands inside there.  While cleaning your computer, clean all vents on the outside, all visible dust inside, especially around all fans, heat sync’s, and the hard drive.  Since the hard drive has all your data on it, you don’t want it to die from overheating because a layer of dust is sitting on it.

Vacuum first as much as you can, then blow the rest of the fine dust out with the blower function.  With compressed air, all you can do is blow it out.  Either way, you’ll get good results.

One major cause why Facebook is slow, and how to help prevent the slowness issues

With Facebook being the most popular social networking site, it has alot of traffic and is continuing to grow.  Many people complain about the lack of speed while on Facebook, especially in certain games or on certain peoples profiles.  There is something you can do about it, and it’s going to be a group effort.

One major cause is constant posting and reposting of status’ like the one below which tells you to repost.  Some of the worst ones are the ones that say “If you don’t repost this, you will have bad luck, if you do repost it you will have something good happen to you”.  This is a load of crap and is just a scam to get people to repost.

“The girl you just called fat.. She’s overdosing on diet pills. The girl you just called ugly.. She spends hours putting makeup on hoping people will like her. The boy you just tripped.. He is abused enough at home. See that man with the ugly scars.. He fought for his country. That guy you just made fun of for crying.. His mother is dying. Put this as you’re status if you’re against bullying. I bet 95% of you wont re-post, but I’m sure the people with a heart and backbone will…”

If we think about this reposting issue for just a second…Your friend posts their status like above.  They have 100 friends, if all 100 friends repost this as it says to do, because they are all good friends…they each have 100 friends, and they too are really good friends and decide to repost as it says.  We now have 100 of your friends reposting which gets 100 of their friends x 100 = 10,000 reposts.  The bad thing is this can happen in a matter of minutes if everyone is online at the same time.  But this is only the first level of friends.  You see, if we take this only just one step further and say these 10,000 friends have 100 friends each, and they all repost…  That’s 1,000,000 posts which could happen in just a few minutes.  I think you can do the math if we go to the fourth level of friends.  100,000,000 posts is unbelievable, and many people have more than 100 friends but many people don’t repost either, so this is a pretty good average.

So, if you are one of those people who repost things just because someone else’s post said to do it, don’t complain Facebook is slow, because you’re one of the people contributing to the slowness!

Now, that’s only the reposting of posts that tell you to do it.  If you’re like my wife, I watched her one time playing Farmville.  She posted every single post that suggested she post it.  Do you want to share your new baby goat with your friends? Share. ,etc. etc. etc.  In 30 seconds time, there must have been twenty different things that came up asking if she wanted to share, and instead of just closing the Window, she clicked share!  I couldn’t believe it!

If any friends want to check her profile to see what’s going on in her life, like Facebook was originally meant for, they can’t.  They have to scroll through a whole bunch of Farmville crap just to find out something that they would have commented on a while ago, but they didn’t see it because Farmville messages took over her entire profile!

So speed on Facebook is one thing, but it also affects your profile and make it difficult for your friends to see anything else going on, and they could be missing out on some news that you wanted to share, because you replaced that latest important news with other unimportant news about how your farm animals are doing.

RIM was down for a few days…

RIM was down for a few days which explains why none of us could receive emails on our Blackberries recently.  They are fully operational again now but in the mean time, what has this done to RIM?  This outage was global, not just a local server that went down.  Below is a link to The Globe and Mail with a full report.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/technology/tech-news/millions-affected-as-blackberry-outage-spreads-to-north-america/article2198209/

Regardless of this issue, I still feel the Blackberry by RIM, is a solid product.  They just happened to have a huge problem which lasted a few days.  Same as if your computer went down for a few days.  Eventually you are up and running again, and it doesn’t matter what smart phone you have you could have the same issue at some point in time.  Eventually, another provider will have a glitch, but it probably won’t make as big of a headline as RIM, simply because RIM is a technology giant.  They just have a greater chance of being heard when they screw up.  I guess I’m on RIM’s side here, yes they screwed up, but I’ll always be a loyal Blackberry user.

I check my Blackberry constantly for messages when I’m not in the office, and I have to admit it was a little frustrating wondering why I’m not getting any emails but then when I get to the office, there they are!  I knew something was up but I didn’t know right away what happened.  Now that I know what happened, I’m not as worried or frustrated.  It was  a temporary issue which is now resolved.

What’s the difference between a screen saver and wallpaper?

I’ve had this happen to me so many times I figured it’s worth writing about it.  As a computer repair technician, I get calls from someone trying to explain what is going on and they continuously refer to their wallpaper as their screen saver and/or vice verse.  This really confuses the hell out of me as I’m sure it does many other technicians.  Rather than  get frustrated with my client, which I know most of my competitors do, I explain to them the difference.

It really makes a huge difference in some cases if you say one thing versus another.  When it comes to technology, if you are having trouble and you are trying to explain to your technician what the problem is you are having; keep it simple.  Don’t try to talk techy because you’lll probably only confuse your technician and the job will take twice as long, and trust me, they will charge for their time, or even worse, they will purchase you the wrong part and you could be stuck with restocking fees or the entire cost of the part.  Like another issues many people have is they say they need a bigger hard drive when what they really meant to say was they need more RAM/memory.  Many technicians would argue that “You said you wanted a bigger hard drive, I bought and installed a new hard drive, now you pay for the new hard drive”.  So you paid for something you didn’t want because you asked for the wrong thing, and that still didn’t fix the main issue.

OK, now that I’ve gone off on a rant, let’s answer the question in our title here.  The difference between a screen saver and wallpaper.  A screen saver is what comes on your screen after you don’t touch the keyboard and mouse for a certain amount of time. The amount of time depends on what you have it set to.  The wallpaper is the background picture/image that is showing when you have no programs open and you are looking at all the icons on your desktop.  If you don’t know what your desktop is, there’s another article to write. :)

Basically, your wallpaper is stationary and typically never changes or moves, although some do.  It’s only visible when no programs are open covering it up.  Your screensaver will always change and or move around on your screen and it’s purpose is to save your screen from burning an image into it when on your screen for too long.  This is why it’s called “Screen” “Saver”.  It comes on over top of everything that is open.

When a client calls me and says, my computer just rebooted and I see my screen saver now, I kinda know they couldn’t possibly see their screen saver now because they just rebooted, they probably mean their wallpaper.  When they say they can see their wallpaper, I pretty much know they are really talking about wallpaper.  So in the end, even if you can’t explain things correctly and you are really trying to, a good technician will probably be able to figure out what you are talking about, or at the very least, the technician should ask you questions to confirm you are both talking about the same thing.  My recommendation is, if you are trying to get help, don’t lead your technician off in the wrong direction by trying to talk techy.  It could cost you.  If you want to talk techy, it can help you so they know they can’t take advantage of you, but do yourself a favor and learn the proper terms first, otherwise they’ll know you have no clue what’s going on and they could take you for everything you got.

Daniel Gauthier is not only the president of Twinbytes Inc doing computer repairs and consultations but also is the author of Tech-Knowledgy where you can learn all the tech terms and what they are, what they mean, and what role they play in the computer.  This truly levels the playing field between computer techs and non-techy’s.

Will Apple die now that Steve Jobs is gone?

What will happen with Apple now that Steve Jobs has passed away?  Will Apple lose its momentum?  Will Apple lose a huge chunk of their market share?

Experts and speakers on behalf of Apple have been talking about how Apple has been setup with good management and excellent players with expertise in various areas that they should sustain their market share for at least the next couple years.  However, Steve Jobs did still play a huge role by putting his heart in sole into the business and inspiring the employees and management team.  Without Steve Jobs, Apple will certainly never be the same again, however, they will still succeed for a long time to come if they stay on track and keep the same good management team they currently have.

I’m sure Microsoft will be feeling a little less pressure with the unfortunate death of Steve (May he rest in peace),  but they shouldn’t be ignorant about how power a team Steve has put in place to keep things running.  As long as Microsoft doesn’t slip up, they just have a waiting game, before Apple could possible start slipping themselves.  But who’s to say a 3rd player doesn’t come out of the wood work, like Red Hat or some other flavor of Linux.  Even Bill Gates himself isn’t imortal, and as much as many people don’t want to admit it, his time will one day come too, (Knock on wood)… Then the question will be: “What will the world be like without Steve Jobs and Bill Gates?”  Will technology start to fall apart?  Will our growth rate in the technology sector simply slow down?  Or will we have new technology geniouses rise and show the world what new exciting things are yet to come?

Many applications are OpenSource now, which, if you don’t know what that means, is any programmer can take this code and modify it for their own use, distribute for free, or sell it.  Linux, as mentioned earlier, is an operating system (Similar to Windows or the Mac) with a graphical user interface (GUI) but looks different and doesn’t provide support for all applications, and there is no tech support number to call for help, unless you get a paid edition like from www.redhat.com and have tech support included.  However, good luck finding a local computer tech that can provide support for this operating system also.  There are so many variations of Linux including many Open Source ones like Ubuntu.  Most technicians will be experimenting with the Open Source versions rather than a paid version, and they are basically on their own for troubleshooting and staying up to date with the latest fixes, patches and compatibility with other applications you are so used to using in Microsoft Windows and Apple’s OS’.

My advice right now, don’t jump to any conclusions and don’t make any drastic changes or decisions based on the loss of Steve Jobs.  Everything will be fine for a while and as you know, anything can change with time.

SOLVED: Hard drive mysteriously full out of no where. Right before my eyes.

My last blog as posted below shows part of the solution to a problem thousands are reporting online but no one seems to have an answer for it.  Many people saying they had a problem with their hard drive mysteriously getting full, out of no where, right before their eyes!  I found that it was folder duplication, but the problem was to find where it was.  If you right click on each folder, you would expect it to tell you which folder has how many files and sub-folders, etc.  It doesn’t report the actual number which is what makes this impossible to find.  There is a way to find out where the problem is exactly, but then the next step is how to delete all those files.

Some cases, it’s the computer itself that got a virus and is recreating the folders, in that case you might need to format the drive.  But if you have more than one computer in your office or home, that other computer could be the culprit, which was my experience with a client of mine.  We had to clean the 2nd computer that was causing the problem and remove the duplicates from the main computer.

Part of the trick was finding where those files where that were duplicated, which at the time, we didn’t know where duplicates.  We just knew there were lots of files taking space somewhere, but when you right click each folder, it doesn’t tell us the true size of the folder because it’s hidden the actual count.  Even with show hidden files turned, on etc. that didn’t help at all.  There are several free programs online which can show how many files are where on your computer.  Some work, some don’t.  I found one that worked and was able to tell me where the huge folder was with sub-folders taking 300GB of unnecessary space.

Using the program in my previous tip, we solved the problem by removing those duplicates.  Many blogs and forums are talking about checking other settings, etc but those answers are all wrong, since the question was “The hard drive filled up right before my eyes”.  System restore points and things like that happen over time, not over night, and especially not right before your eyes.

Program to delete all sub folders directories with long names

Name too long to delete?  If you need to delete a huge amount of subfolders that have file names too long to delete and you can’t go through one by one deleting them all, you need a program that will delete them for you regardless of the length of the name.  I found a software program that lets you do this.  It has a free trial, but it’s good enough to clean up that computer the one time you probably ever have to do it.  No need to purchase it, the free trial is enough to do the job.

http://www.purgeie.com/delinv/ is the direct link to download this free trial of the software program.  It’s easy to install and use.  It gives you three trys and/or 15 days.  That’s long enough to do the job.  It was good enough for me to do for a client that had impossible to delete files in the thousands that were created by a virus.  Long story, but once I found the cause of the problem to be duplicate files in this directory, I simply deleted the directory along with all subdirectories and it worked with this program, freed up 300GB of space.

How to monopolize the web in every area of your business?

There is no trick on this one.  Check this out.  My website www.twinbytes.ca is already Page Rank 2 and ranks in the first position on just about every service I already offer, including computer repair and data recovery.  This helps with moving forward, so anyone that I link to will benefit from my link and anything I add to my website is getting higher ranks already.  So awesome!

Okay, so I just started offering a new service.  Now before you say anything, this is not meant for me to promote my services, although it is doing it anyway.  :)   So moving on…. I started a new service and created a new webpage in my website.  You follow me still?  It’s not a new web “Site”, it’s just a new web “page” within my existing top ranking web “site”.  I convert VHS tapes to DVD’s.  I know this is kinda old, but people have been asking me and I didn’t have the equipment.  I got the equipment, created a webpage, and within a couple weeks I’m ranking position #1 in Stouffville, ON and position #8 in Markham, ON.  That’s without doing anything but simply creating the webpage and uploading it.

Now, I’m working on starting my SEO side of the business where I can do SEO for businesses.  Get this… I don’t have a webpage about SEO services yet, but I am already on page one if you do a search for SEO.  lmao!  This is hilarious!  It links to my blog! Wow, because my blog is a pagerank 3 and has lots of quality content, my blog is becoming an authority site and because it links to my main website, it helps push it up even further.

So what does all this mean?  Focus on one area of your business, and push it up the ranks as hard as you can, without doing things that can negatively hurt your ranking.  Trust me, people do stupid things that hurt their rankings rather than push them up.  Focus on one thing, and eventually when you add other services, you will rank high for them as well, immediately!  Just like my VHS conversion service, which, if you Google those words, I show up position 4 on page one. ;)   I think you get the point.

Google’s search algorithm – what does it have to do with SEO?

The link below takes you to a video from Google explaining the inside scoop on them changing their algorithms.  Ofcourse, they don’t tell us what 500 different changes they made, but one of them was making it key that when people search for something, they assume you want to find those companies that are local to you.

For example, I’m #1 when someone searches for “computer repair Markham”, without the quotes.  But if someone searches for “computer repair” and doesn’t specify the city, they assume it is within my city and I still show up at the top of the search engine on page one.  This is because they check the IP address of my computer along with other things, which some people would say is an invasion of privacy.  They are actually spying on our computer to a certain extent to get this information from us.  But how can they provide a great service like this, without gathering some information about us first?  You have to give a little to get a lot.  As long as they are not using any information for ill purposes, then we should have no worries.

The importance with SEO, is that those websites which have been done properly for SEO services, will show up at the top of the search engines.  My own website, www.twinbytes.ca is at the top because of all the work I’ve done on it.  A couple works in progress I have currently were designed by different people in different ways and I’m trying to get them to the top so I can prove I’ve done it.  http://www.primetimeservices.com/ was designed with WordPress, www.protouchlandscape.ca was designed with an HTML software application then uploaded to the web, www.momentslikethese.ca was done with a online managed application which gives no options to editing the HTML coding without having to download the files, manually editing them and uploading again without interfering with the structure of the site so it will still work, and still be manageable by my client.

Another trick, just my mentioning these websites in this blog is going to help them huge!  How?  Well, because my blog is already popular and a pagerank 3, it apparently will make them automatically a pagerank 2.  What is page ranking?  That’s for another article, but it basically gives them more credibility in the online world.  We will find out soon enough if this theory holds true if they appear as PR2 with little extra effort.

Windows 8 – What is it going to be like?

Although Windows 7 was so totallly awesome in many peoples eyes, Microsoft isn’t stopping there.  Ofcourse they aren’t.  Are you kidding?  They had XP pretty good then screwed up with Vista, but totally came back with Windows 7!  Now, what can we expect with Windows 8?  Are they going to screw up again?  I’ll tell you a little what I know, but it’s best to try it on a non critical business computer first, or try it at home before at work.  Below is a video straight from Microsoft so you can hear what they have to say about it.  Keep reading below this video.

The new Windows 8 is looking like more fancy that productivity, but it does seem to be designed in a way to make things move faster and multitask more effectively.  Very cool for personal use, and seems that it may be more productive for business.  However, as you can see in the Youtube video above, they explain that Windows 7 apps can run side by side with Windows 8 apps.  What does this mean exactly?  Does that mean they are different platform of applications which Windows 7 apps such as Microsoft Word, Outlook and other business applications are not going to benefit from the Windows 8 operating system?  If this is the case, there may be very little benefit for businesses to upgrade their operating systems to Windows 8 if only Windows 8 apps run faster.  However, they do show how you can run various apps side by side.  It is looking good.  I haven’t personally had time to get my hands on Windows 8 yet, but when I do, I’ll be sure to write about my personal experience with it as well as a video sample.
